A Soldier Looking For Forgiveness…

January 27th, 2010 Richie Rich Comments off

Before I go into this story, let me preface this with some history about me.  This is going to be a very personal post revealing something that I’ve told very few people in the last 15 years.  Why am I spreading this online now instead of keeping it a secret? Well, I had a good talk with Pastor Steve about this and made a few realizations about it.

  1. What I was seeing wasn’t dreams, but memories.
  2. Not my memories, but someone else’s begging to be heard.
  3. When I figured out I was suppose to tell the stories, I had a huge feeling of relief.

For the past 15 years, ever since dating an “adventurous” girl named Tiffany (last name withheld to protect the guilty. ;) ), I started noticing things around me.  Not items things, but spiritual things.  Yes, actual ghosts and demons.  I found that if I meditated a bit and concentrated, I could sense what they were saying.  How do I know I wasn’t crazy? Well, I’ve described what people look like to other.  Not people I’ve met, but people that passed many years before. Even passed on a few personal messages.  There was even a time when I was dropping off my friend Elric, and while talking to him about it, sensed hundreds of sprits who have died various ways.  Shootings, old age, fires, collapses, diseases, etc.  Some were hundreds of years old begging just to be recognized.  That same night, I also quoted Revelations completely in graphic detail…with never having read it even once.

Can I do this on demand? Not really.  Although it does explain why I haven’t dreamt in a long while.

Now for the story.

This one is about 12 years old and just now being told.  I only ever had it once and it’s only gotten clearer as time progressed.

A solider is patrolling with his platoon in Vietnam. It’s raining, dark, and otherwise just not a place he wants to be.  He keeps thinking about how much he wants to be home with his girl.  As they are patrolling, he spots movement in the distance, but they doesn’t hear the noise the creature is making.  He points his gun into the distance and takes the best aim he can.  As the movement gets closer to an clear opening, and a clean shot), he preps to shoot.  He sees what looks like a body, shoots, and the bullet makes contact.  A split second later he sees a woman falling down with a surprised look on her face.  He approaches the her to get a better idea of what was going on.  Upon investigating, he realized he killed an innocent village woman.

The soldier in question has been asking for forgiveness since that day, even after his death.

At this point, the dream flashes white and repeats in the view point of the mother.  Although I don’t know what she is saying, she is searching for her son. She knows their are patrols coming and doesn’t want her son to be captured.  As she moves through the trees and brush quietly calling for her son, she doesn’t realize she is near a patrol.  Upon passing the clearing, she hears a shot.  By the time she can turn her head in the direction, she feels what feels like a punch on her chest and a burning sensation.  She trips and falls. The last few seconds before she passes on, she feels the warmth of blood exiting her chest as she grows cold and is thinking “Why?”

At this point, the dream flashes once more and this time, I see an overview of what happened.  However, in this case, I also see the little boy, hiding not but 100ft away, witnessing his mother being killed and scared to move for fear of being killed himself.

As mentioned above, the soldier in question died of guilt, begging to be forgiven for killing an innocent mother. As I write this, I sense his regret, and relief that his story has been told.  At the same time, I sense the anger from the mother as to why she had to die.

I will end this with a message to both spirits, if you don’t forgive, you won’t move on.

To my readers, as I have more of these, I will post them.  That is the only reason I can think of as to why I have them.

The Adventure Continues

He’s a competitive racer ranking fastest in the U.S. – second in the world. He plays rugby, golf and tennis. He even water skis, snow skis and dives for fun. And, by the way, he’s quadriplegic.

Untitled 1 The Adventure Continues

Duane Morrow, Primerica’s Executive Vice President of Field Marketing, was living and working in England when he broke his neck during a rugby game in 2004. He was paralyzed from the chest down, but, for this tenacious athlete, life didn’t end. It simply changed … and he adapted.

DuaneABRugby1 The Adventure Continues

Life 2.0

After surgery and months of inpatient rehabilitation at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Morrow was ready for more. He had been told that there was a 99% chance he’d never walk again, but he rebuked those odds. He asked his nurses to wake him up at 5 a.m. so he could be at the gym at 6 a.m. when it opened. He worked out for hours, trying to retrain his body to walk.

Tampa Dune Rugby The Adventure Continues

Morrow saw how the therapy was helping him over time. He met with Shepherd Center officials to try to establish an extreme therapy program for other athletes who wanted to go beyond traditional treatments. While the center was not equipped for the program at the time, only four months later, Morrow got a call from Gary Ulicny, president of the Shepherd Center. He wanted to try it out. Beyond Therapy was born. Now, two years later, the program has doubled in size. Plus, there’s a 100-person waiting list … and Morrow is the spokesperson. His Primerica family is not surprised. Morrow’s excitement and determination have become a banner – an example of what it means to be a Primerica rep.

That drive, a “saint” for a wife, hard work and top-notch technology – like robotic treadmills – helped him to begin standing with assistance, Morrow says. But he gives the real credit where he says credit is due: “Doctors don’t know everything. God’s pretty cool.” Today he has renewed use of his arms and hands, and even walks with the use of a cane.

P3178854 The Adventure Continues

While he’s no longer an inpatient at the Shepherd Center, Morrow still receives physical therapy there. When he’s not traveling the country on Primerica business, he routinely walks seven flights of stairs. He throws medicine balls and he runs in the pool. He’s hardcore. “You can adapt, or you can go into a cave and give up,” Morrow says. “The technology exists. You can figure it out.”

Now Morrow is helping other people “find their new normal.” He visits Shepherd’s patients often – even those he’s never met before. He explains that people who once took 15-20 minutes to get ready in the morning are now taking 1-2 hours. Their lives have changed dramatically on all levels and, according to him, there are certain things that are better learned from someone who’s figured out how to live this new life. So, why has he taken on this personal mission? “Everyone wants to live a life of significance,” he says. “That’s real wealth.”

It Ain’t Over

He’s convinced (and convincing!) that people with physical disabilities can lead extreme lives. For the past four years, he’s participated in an Adventure Skills Workshop sponsored by the Shepherd Center – two years as a patient, two as a volunteer counselor. People with all degrees of ability attend these workshops to participate in rugby, rock wall climbing, tubing, fishing, water skiing, zip lining and more! Morrow says the real advantage is that they get to be with 200 other people who are looking for their new normal, too. Many of them find it there, too. One man at a recent camp says he thought he would never hunt again. But, with the help of harnesses and assistance, he was able to find a new way to do something he always loved.

adventure The Adventure Continues

Making It Work

For Morrow, this whole experience has been a lesson in perseverance. It’s a lesson that he believes able-bodied people can learn, too. He tells how people can begin learning from the disabled: First, he says, don’t let little inadequacies embarrass you. Work through them. Second, introduce children to people with disabilities. That way, it’s not uncomfortable to them when they are in close quarters with someone in a wheelchair. Plus, they’ll learn that setbacks don’t have to mean the end of the world. Finally, ask before helping a disabled person, and don’t be offended if he or she says, “no.” They don’t need as much help as we think, he says. Besides, some disabled people, like Morrow himself, can be more “able” than the rest of us!

The Sack Lunches

June 1st, 2009 Richie Rich Comments off

Before I get back to my regularly unscheduled postings, I thought I would share this.

My cousin sent me this as an email.  Normally  I just file them in either my Personal folder or the Trash depending on what it is.  I don’t know if this really happened or not.  It is still a god story.

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. ’I’m glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,‘ I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.. ‘Where are you headed?‘ I asked the soldier seated nearest to me.

Petawawa. We’ll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we’re being deployed to Afghanistan.

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time.

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch.

No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn’t be worth five bucks. I’ll wait till we get to base.

His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. ‘Take a lunch to all those soldiers.‘ She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. ‘My son was a soldier in Iraq; it’s almost like you are doing it for him.

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, ’Which do you like best – beef or chicken?‘  ’Chicken,‘ I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class.

This is your thanks.

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me.

I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.‘ He handed me twenty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand, an said, ‘I want to shake your hand.

Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain’s hand. With a booming voice he said, ‘I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.‘ I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. ‘It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You.’

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers. As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals.

It seemed so little…

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘United States of America‘ for an amount of ‘up to and including my life.

That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

Pass this link on to your friends and family.  If you see a solider or know a veteran, make sure you thank them.  You probably wouldn’t be here if not for the Men and Women protecting this country and our way of life.  Freedom isn’t free, and these people are paying for it for us.

CarMax – Just Another Dealership?

May 5th, 2009 Richie Rich Comments off

This post is about the recent experience my wife and I have had at the CarMax on Eastchase in Arlington/Ft. Worth.  The names and facts have NOT been changes to allow throwing stones at the guilty.

This story started end of March.  March 27th, 2009.  A few days before our old ‘89 Buick Skylark bit the dust.  Brakes failed, stearing became a problem, and the oncoming traffic didn’t help matters either.  We looked around online at CarMax and a few other local dealerships wanting to stay below the $10k mark.  Their site made it easy to search about the 5 or 6 dealerships within a 300 mile radius.  That being said, they had about 15 cars below that mark.  All and all, we settled on a 99 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport.  As an added bonus, it only had 63k miles on.  A 99 with 63k miles, for $8200, would you turn that down?

The following week, we sold the Buick to them.  Got $100 for it.  Double what I was expecting.  So far at this point, it has been a good experience.  Bill Dearman (the sales rep that helped us) was curtious the entire time and let us take our time.  He earned our repeat business AND my recommendation.  Both things I don’t take lightly.

Well, fast forward about 33 days.  Fuel pump goes out.  I’m no machanic, but for a 10 year old car, the fuel pump probably should have been replaced just due to old age.  At least those are my thoughts.  I call up Bill and asked his opinion.  He said to call the service center and ask up the chain until I got the top dog or the answer I wanted.  That was my first mistake, I should have listend and done just that.  Instead, I called one, and the rep on the other end (don’t recall the name), was very rude about the 30 day warrenty.  I understand that 30 days was it and they have no obligation to do anything after that period.  But in the same token, this is a major repair shortly after warrenty period.  It’s just good customer service to take care of.  Now, 10 days? 15 days? 30 days after expiry, I wouldn’t have even bothered to try to get it for free or even discounted.

I made a few complaints on Twitter about the bill we got from Pepboys ($730).  That was my second mistake, I took it to Pepboys.  They insisted that more work needed to be done than was required.  Some services they were suggesting were completed not but 2k miles before.  On top of that, had I just went back to CarMax anyways, even paying for it, would have saved between $200 and $300 off the repair!  Well, @CarMaxChris spoke up and suggested I call the Customer Service Center (Executive Response Team) to see if they can fix this.

Called them and spoke with a women named Paige.  She asked for some details about what happened and said she’ll make a call to the same store and see what the Service Manager could do (His name was also Bill.  Don’t ask for his last name because frankly, I’d buther it).  He called about 5 mins later and asked a few more questions.  By the time he called though, the tank was already dropped at Pepboys so he couldn’t tow it over.  When all was said and done, he confirmed what Bill Dearman said.  Had I gone straight to him in the first place, it would have been towed and repaired at no cost.  30 Days is the rule, but most are handled on a case by case basis.  In cases like mine, they let it slide.  It was just a few days out of warrenty and good customer service to just do it.

Needless to say, they have earned a repeat customer.

Weight Loss Update And Other Personal Things…

April 24th, 2009 Richie Rich Comments off

I know everone is just DYING to know about this (it’s nice to dream right?), but I’ve been keeping tabs on my weight since starting at 24 Hour Fitness.  Almost daily actually.  Since Mar 16th I have lost 13 lbs.  And it shows.  I look slimer, I feel better, have more energy, and my love handles don’t bounce as much when I run (more of a jog really).

Wife and I also started on a 90 day sprint.  Might post up weekely updates on that as well.

Also began work on Arlington’s 4th of July website.  It needs MASSIVE work.  The current incarnation is NOT of my creation, but it slowly turning into one.  The Google Maps screenshots have been turned into real GMaps, the search on the main page has turned into Google Custom Search, and Google Analytics has also been added to all pages.  BTW, Google, you can send those endorsement checks to my creditors, they are hurting so bad without my payments that they could really use the help.  Why else would they be raising rates right? They wouldn’t do such a decietfull thing as raise rates just because they can right?

I’ve also been having a good talk with Larry Wiedel this week.  Made me realize that I really need to not work so hard.  What’s the point of working 30 hour days for your family, if you never spend time with them?  For that sir, I thank you.

Anyways, I better get back to catching up so I can spend quality time with my daughter and wife today.  And I’m glad I did make time this week just to spend with them.

See you in the next post!

Maxine – Bail ‘em Out?

March 11th, 2009 Richie Rich Comments off

Why bail them out when the feds can't run a brothel?

Normally I wouldn’t post something like this, but it made me laugh.  A friend of my wife’s sent this to her.

In other news, we just got back from Phoenix and I will have some more relevant posts up soon.  3 blogs and 3 businesses are a bit hard to run.

Future plans and upcoming posts…

I’m Back!

March 2nd, 2009 Richie Rich Comments off

I’m Back!!!

Despite a short reprieve, I am back and ready to go.  I had to take the last site down due to a request from home office.  No biggie, no threats, just a request.  Since it was basically a “take it down” or “you’re fired” move, I decided my clients were more important.

I’ve changed the overall aspect of the site, look, feel, content, etc.  There will still be some finance related posts, just more generic.  There will be additional posts for my personal life as well as PR stunts related to my computer business.  I may even throw in some stuff about the little OS I’m working on.

Anyways, to make a short post shorter, I’m back with plenty of good stuff to come!
